Abstract/Summary

This provides an overview of the critical issues at stake in nontraditional casting. It considers this casting practice primarily across television, film and theatre, with its main case study being the Netflix series Bridgerton (2020-present). It brings together perspectives focusing on production, textual meaning and reception, as well as broader socio-cultural discourses concerning equity, diversity and inclusion, to explore nontraditional casting’s relationship to the politics of representation.
