Abstract/Summary

This essay explores the tension between the growing cultural capital of the Beckett ‘brand’ and the issues of dispossession which are at the heart of Beckett’s work through an investigation of selected productions from the Beckett in the City project, a series of site-specific performances of Beckett’s work directed by Sarah Jane Scaife. The discussion of Dublin performances of Act Without Words II (2013) and Beckett in the City: the Women Speak (2015) in marginalised urban spaces draws on writing by Judith Butler and Athena Athanasiou on dispossession.
